Garage door safety sensors, called photo eyes or detectors, sit on each side of the door no higher than 6 inches (15 cm) off the floor. One sends an invisible beam and the other one receives it. When the beam breaks, the opener stops the door and sends it back up.
The opener lost the beam. Something is in the way, a lens is dirty, or a sensor got knocked out of line.
Thats not the sensors. The close travel limit is set too far, so the opener thinks the door hit something and reverses it. We reset the limit and test it.
On LiftMaster and Chamberlain sensors the sending eye glows amber and the receiving eye glows green. A green light thats off or flickering means the sensors are blocked or out of line. Both lights off means no power is reaching them, which points to the wiring.
The light on the opener flashes when the door reverses. Older Chamberlain and LiftMaster openers flash 10 times when the sensors are the problem.
Holding the button down overrides the sensors on most openers. If the door closes that way, the sensors are the problem, not the motor. It gets the door shut, but the sensors still need fixing.

Sensors are sold as a matched set, a sender and a receiver. When one fails, we install a new pair so both sides match your opener.
Each sensor runs a thin 2 wire cable back to the opener. On Chamberlain and LiftMaster openers the solid white wires go in the white terminal and the striped wires go in the grey one. A staple through the wire, mice, or a wire pulled loose at the opener cuts the signal. We test the wire end to end and fix it or run new wire.

Genie openers use Genie Safe-T-Beam sensors, and LiftMaster sensors wont work on them. A blinking red light on a Genie sensor points to a blocked beam, a dirty lens or a loose wire.

Not every garage door sensor is a safety sensor. Smart sensors tell your phone the door is open. They dont stop the door from closing on anything.

Yes. On most openers, holding the wall button down until the door reaches the floor closes it. The remote wont close it until the sensors are fixed.
Not for good. Holding the wall button gets the door shut once. Unhooking or taping over the sensors leaves the door with no way to see a kid, a pet or a car under it.
The safety sensors only work while the door is closing. A door that opens fine but goes back up on the way down points to the sensors first. Clear the path, wipe the lenses and check both sensor lights.
Not the sensors. Some LED bulbs in or near the opener give off radio noise that cuts your remote range. If the remote wont work but the wall button does, try a different bulb. If the door goes back up on the way down, look at the sensors, not the bulb.
A blinking green light on LiftMaster and Chamberlain sensors means the beam isnt getting through. Clear the path, wipe the lenses and line them up. On Genie sensors, a blinking red light means the same thing.
Safety sensors dont. They run on power from the opener through the wire. If an app says a sensor battery is low, thats the myQ or alarm sensor on the door, and you swap that battery yourself.
